The Sound and the Glory How the Seattle Sounders Showed Major League Soccer How to Win Over America Matt Pentz Books Reviews

  • Great book by Matt; very much agree that even if you aren’t a soccer fan, this gives you an inside perspective of how a professional sport team - from owner down to players and even fans, functions when trying to take the ‘next step.’
really enjoy how it kind of ambles along from one person’s perspective, back to the next, keeping the timeframe semi-constant, but without a rigid timeline.
  • Love the history to present day touch in this throughout. Great job, author Matt Pentz. Captivating and encouraging to us soccer fans in Seattle. We love this!!!
  • This was a great book. Inside stories, a very good grasp of what happened... up through 2016 I was heavily involved with the Club and I can tell you that Matt has gotten almost everything right about the season and what happened.
  • This is a must read for ant Sounders fan. It will also be enjoyable and interesting for anyone interested in American soccer.
  • Excellent read. A must have for any Sounders fan, and would be interesting for any fan of sports writing as well.
  • This story was very well written. It made you feel like you were one of the team.
  • I received a complimentary copy copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Although I am a sports fan, I am a soccer neophyte. Between the FIFA video games and the 2018 World Cup I have grown to enjoy the game. In “The Sound and the Glory” I got my first look into the history of one of the top clubs in MLS. Matt Pentz does not simply recite history; he weaves a tale of how the Sounders began, and with them a long bond with the people of Seattle and the region. Instead of sports statistics and play by play, Pentz provides the backstory of the management, coaches, and players up to and during their magical 2016 season. It is interesting to learn how different paths brought players from distant South America and from the Seattle area together where they became one team.

From my perspective, you do not need to be a long time soccer enthusiast to enjoy this book. What you will find is a series of stories centering in things like civic pride, self awareness and struggle, the business of sport, and the tough task of a professional footballer having to leave a club and city that they have called home. Pentz is from the Seattle area, and it shows in his writing style. His words and presentation have an authenticity birthed from that local knowledge as he describes the good and the bad of the rise of the Sounders. You can feel the real emotion behind the stories told here, as if sitting in the living room talking to one of the locals.

This is a well written book covering an important part of soccer history in the United States. I really enjoyed reading it and would recommend the book to any reader interested in sports books.
