Incredible Hulk Epic Collection Man or Monster? Epic Collection Incredible Hulk Stan Lee Jack Kirby Steve Ditko Dick Ayers Books Reviews

  • I had the old black & white Essentials Hulk trade paperback and was quite the happy camper. Then, it was lost and I had a hard time trying to buy a replacement copy. I really panicked when I heard that Marvel was discontinuing the Essentials and Visionaries line until I learned what their Epic Collection line would consist of. My first Epic Collection purchase was the Captain America stories which included John Byrne's entire run and the beginning of Mike Zeck's. My second was Peter David 's Incredible Hulk which featured the end of Dale Keown's run and the beginning of Gary Frank's. As much as I enjoyed those first two, they pale in comparison with the original Hulk Epic Collection featuring the original Stan Lee/Jack Kirby/Steve Ditko stories. I've read them may times in other reprints and I never get tired of them. I even love that they reprinted the Hulk's first meeting with the Fantastic Four, The Avengers, and Spiderman. I hope Marvel keeps these trade paperbacks in circulation for years to come.

I've come to terms with the fact that Marvel and DC can do whatever they want with their characters, however they want. Instead of wasting time griping about it, I'll content myself by purchasing my favorite stories of their characters from the Silver Age up until before Flashpoint/Marvel Now. This collection is definitely one of those.
  • Talk about Bang for your Buck and that is what you get. All the early Kirby /Hulk work (let's not forget Steve Ditko ) crossovers with the Avengers and Fantastic Four, Hulk/Thing and Hulk/Thor battles. I had the Hulk Marvel Masterworks which collected the first 6 issues and foolishly loaned it out, never to see it again, and an old Giant sized Fantastic Four reprint of FF 25-26, a Treasury Editions which reprinted Journey Into Mystery 112. To have them in this edition is just too cool for school man!. This is the cream of the crop until the Hulk got his own series again and Herb Trimpe became the regular artist. I paid $22 bucks for this and I do not have to hunt down individual stories or worry about destroying an original to satisfy my reading/rereading Habit. Unless you don't dig that 60's Jack Kirby/Steve Ditko/Stan Lee art/Story-telling there is no reason to not own these reprints. When I was younger in the 70's and 80's, I had a lot of good times finding issues/reprints at flea markets and when I became old enough to drive, comic stores with Glorious unheard of before, back-issue bins to satiate my habit for comics. I have to say that I now prefer to be able buy what I want thanks to the internet and collections like this.
P.S. I have just read the Fantastic Four #12 reprint and noticed the Hulk does not have all five digits on his hands and feet. I would love to have seen the letters page for that issue. Hopefully a No=Prize was issued or an explanation from the editor given. Still, this is great material.
  • If you're a fan of the Hulk, you *need* this volume. Not only does it collect the original 6-issue Hulk series, but it also collects all of Hulk's appearances *outside* that series, leading up to his long stay in TALES TO ASTONISH. If you want to see the *full* evolution of the Hulk, you can't go without this beautiful full-color volume.
  • How can you go wrong with these early Hulk tales, all collected in a nice volume? A nice throwback to a time when comics (and fans) took themselves a little more seriously. I love re-reading these early Marvel stories. You can really feel the creative energy and spirit that must have been a part of the Marvel offices at that time.
  • This was a surprise. In most collections of reprints, you get the first six issues of the defunct series, and then they jump to the Tales of Astonish story line. But this one picked up all the early comics Hulk was part of. The first few Avenger Comics. Three Fantastic Four Comics, A Spider-Man guest star and then Hulk versus Giant Man. It was a refreshing change in the line up.
  • This is a great collection for completists because it captures every appearance of the Hulk from 1962-1964. In addition to the original Incredible Hulk series (which was shockingly cancelled after only 6 issues), it includes his appearances in the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, Amazing Spider-Man Journey into Mystery (Thor) and Tales to Astonish (which he shared with Giant Man). The stories are fun and it's interesting to see the modifications that were made to the character over time.
  • The absolute best Hulk trade ever made! The best classic stories all in chronological order that established how truly great the Green-skinned Goliath was and developed him into an icon. Look no further or I will smash!!!
  • a re visit of some of the hulks classic battles fair stories a good buy
